Overexcitability
Overexcitabilities are defined as intensities that people can have in a variety of areas. Dabrowski, a Polish psychologist, noted these overexcitabilities in his personality theory of positive disintegration. While any person can have these intensities, those who are gifted are more likely to have more of them.
Knowledge is power and understanding what overexcitabilities a person has can help that person understand themselves without judgement. Some can take these overexcitabilities and use them as a positive to further themselves. Others find the challenge in this and see them as a weakness or a challenge in their life. What would happen if someone could understand them and flip it to use it as a strength?
In order to use them as a strength, a person needs to understand what they are and how overexcitabilities appear. To begin, there are 5 categories of overexcitabilities. In future posts, each one will be unpacked so that you can understand each one better. The 5 categories are listed below:
Psychomotor overexcitabilities
Emotional overexcitabilities
Sensual (Senses) overexcitabilities
Imaginational overexcitabilities
Intellectual overexcitabilities
