Sensual (Senses) Overexcitabilities
Our senses allow us to expereince the world in unique ways. Taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight can help us take in the surrounding environment. Sometimes, though, too much cannot become overwhelming.
Maybe you or someone you love have certain sounds or smells that can feel like nails on a chalkboard. The rest of the world cannot understand the aversion, but you feel it in your bones.
Perhaps there are certain textures that irriate you such as in foods or clothimg. They get under your skin and become uncomfortable and distracting.
There is HOPE
Let the fact that you are reading this be an encouragement to you that you are not alone. Sometimes you can learn on your own how to tolerate these sensations, but othertimes it takes outside help when they cannot be avoided.
What can be done? Is there hope? Yes there is hope. Some things that you can try are to distance yourself from whatever sensation. If you cannot avoid it, then learning how to breathe through the moment can also be a help.
The good news is that when there are certain sensations that feel horrible that the opposite is also true. By discovering what textures, smells, sounds, and sights bring comfort can help in times of stress.
